Do you print your digital images?
So, I turned 30 at the weekend and part of my celebrations was to put on a wee exhibition - it wasn’t much - just a few friends and a few prints.
This got me thinking though - how little I actually get my work printed out for my own enjoyment. Sure, I see my work in print often enough but the images are used in design, cropped or not printed on quality paper. It’s never for my own enjoyment that I see them in print.
I recently read a great article in the Independent on this subject. It’s a great piece, not only discussing how our viewing experience of photos has changed (we’re screen based now, rather than print based) but also the reason we take images has changed…
A high proportion of photos on social networking sites tend to be posed self-portraits, the telltale arm holding the camera often hoving into view at the side.
When I got engaged last year, My Fiancée printed out all the digital images I took on when we got engaged in Barcelona and made an album. They were just quick snaps taken on a camera phone but it was such a rare occurrence to have printed photos of us together, it was something special.
I have a tendency to think that something is “not important enough to print”. I have my printed portfolio but it’s a hard choice when I think about WHAT images I want to get printed these days of shooting in digital. When I started shooting at 18 in film, the only way of seeing anything was in print. I miss these days.
In my 30th year, I’m aiming to print more and think less about what I’m printing.
Do any of you get images printed on a regular basis?
