Martin Becka - Dubai or Metropolis?

Martin Becka uses 19th century equipment to capture these stunning images of modern day Dubai.

Hauntingly beautiful, they are eerily similar to Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece, Metropolis. (below)

Thanks to Julia over at Visaural Preserves for putting me on to these

Photo clichés by Martin Parr

Some of these are fairly accurate I’d say.

Nick Knight

A few days ago I mentioned Nick Knight was doing a live photoshoot - did anyone watch it?

Some folk were asking me who he was…

Super fast bio is this - gained notoriety in the 1980s for his work documenting the “skinhead” movement. He gained further recognition with his work in (then fairly new) magazine i-D. From here he moved into fashion photography via Yohji Yamamoto. He has most recently directed Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way” music video.

Here is a selection of his work, presented in chronological order…

Skinhead 1982

Steven Jones 1985

yohji yamamoto 1987

Do you print your digital images?

So, I turned 30 at the weekend and part of my celebrations was to put on a wee exhibition - it wasn’t much - just a few friends and a few prints.

This got me thinking though - how little I actually get my work printed out for my own enjoyment. Sure, I see my work in print often enough but the images are used in design, cropped or not printed on quality paper. It’s never for my own enjoyment that I see them in print.

I recently read a great article in the Independent on this subject.  It’s a great piece, not only discussing how our viewing experience of photos has changed (we’re screen based now, rather than print based) but also the reason we take images has changed…

A high proportion of photos on social networking sites tend to be posed self-portraits, the telltale arm holding the camera often hoving into view at the side.

When I got engaged last year, My Fiancée printed out all the digital images I took on when we got engaged in Barcelona and made an album. They were just quick snaps taken on a camera phone but it was such a rare occurrence to have printed photos of us together, it was something special.

I have a tendency to think that something is “not important enough to print”. I have my printed portfolio but it’s a hard choice when I think about WHAT images I want to get printed these days of shooting in digital. When I started shooting at 18 in film, the only way of seeing anything was in print. I miss these days.

In my 30th year, I’m aiming to print more and think less about what I’m printing.

Do any of you get images printed on a regular basis?

“How film is made”.

I found an old exposed roll of 620 film in one of my vintage cameras today and was wondering if it would be able to get developed anywhere. It’s at least 17 years old but perhaps a lot older as it was in my Kodak Junior II camera which was taken out of production in 1959.

Here’s the camera and film in question…

So, this got me thinking about film making techniques and I stumbled across this great video from 1958.

Regardless of if I’m able to get it developed, I’m going to be reloading the camera with some 120 film (after a careful re spooling) and attempt to breath some new life into it.

Cinemagraphs

So - I can’t make up my mind if I like these or not - Some are good, some are dreadful.

Reminds me a lot of harry Potter.

I think I might try my hand at it this week just for the hell of it but I can’t really see it moving into main stream photography.

Fashion bloggers delight though. Can’t wait to see 1000 identikit Alexa Chungs badly animated in .gif form.
